European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
