Patients Coming Off Slimming Injections Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing such drugs need to be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to original weight within about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It was like something flipping and you're instantly starving," described an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
